Hoops Recruiting Central: All about Peach Jam

2016 G/F Tyus Battle

Indiana sent three coaches to Georgia for the Peach Jam finals on Sunday. Who were they watching?

The second evaluation period of July is wrapping up, and the Indiana coaching staff continues to log a lot of miles around the country.

Tom Crean and his staff have spent a good amount of time at the Peach Jam in Georgia, but Crean also made a stop in Fishers at the Fieldhouse on Saturday, and Tim Buckley has spent much of the week at the Battle of the Beach in California.

Crean and assistants Steve McClain and Chuck Martin are both at the Peach Jam today (Sunday) in pursuit of some of the top players in the next two classes.

On Sunday morning, the coaches scouted 2016 five-star guard/forward Tyus Battle, a player that has been on Indiana's radar for a long time. Battle recently picked up a new offer from Duke and will pretty much be able to choose any school in the country, but IU has always been high on his list and he has already been to Bloomington twice.

The coaches also watched 2015 targets Kenny Williams and Chris Clarke on Sunday morning.

Mitchell blowing up

When 2015 point guard Donovan Mitchell told reporters last week that he would take official visits to Indiana and Louisville, he seemed like a bit of an under-the-radar recruit. Mitchell is currently an unranked four-star prospect in the Scout.com.

But Mitchell, a 6-foot-3 guard from New Hampshire, has blown up with his unbelievable play in July. He's generating tons of new interest, so the fact Indiana will get an official visit from him is huge.

This from our recruiting expert, Evan Daniels:

"Mitchell has arguably been the biggest breakout performer of July. He entered the month as an unranked four-star, now he’s primed for a big move when Scout.com updates their list. At 6-foot-3, Mitchell has a powerfully built frame with a long set of arms. He’s an impressive athlete that defends, can handle the ball, sees the floor and is turning into a solid shooter. On Saturday morning, he was active on the glass, threw down dunks in transition, knocked down his only three-point attempt and made plays for his teammates. Mitchell finished with 20 points on 8-for-9 shooting and tossed out five assists.

Trier's big weekend

Allonzo Trier, a 2015 guard from Maryland, continued his strong summer on Saturday at the Peach Jam.

Trier, who owns an Indiana offer, poured in 42 points against another elite 2015 prospect, Isaiah Briscoe, on Saturday. Trier was 10-of-30 from the field and attempted 15 3-pointers.

Trier averaged 30.8 points per game for the tournament.
