Read about a big game for Matt Mayberry, a narrow win for Ben Chappell, and all of the other results from Friday night for IU's verbal commitments...
Ben Chappell
, QB
–
Bloomington (Ind.) High School South –
Chappell completed 18-of-30 passes for 198 yards and one touchdown as South knocked off Perry Meridian, 10-9. Chappell also had one interception in the contest and nearly had a couple of other picks.
Jeff Sanders
, TE
–
Springfield (Ill.) Sacred Heart Griffin H.S. –
An intra-city match-up turned ugly early as Sacred Heart Griffin humbled Springfield H.S. 50-9. SHG – which scored touchdowns on six of its first seven possessions - only threw the ball 12 times in the lopsided victory, instead relying on tailback Anthony Pendergrass, who scored five touchdowns. SHG (2-0) is ranked No. 3 in the latest Class 5A poll, trailing Geneseo and Rochelle.
Matt Mayberry
, OLB/FB
–
Hinsdale (Ill.) South H.S. –
He’s expected to play defense in college, but Mayberry had a huge night on the offensive side of the ball in South’s 42-18 win over Lyons. Mayberry ran for 278 yards on 32 carries and added four touchdowns. He played exclusively on offense in this week’s contest after playing on both sides of the ball in the opener for Hinsdale South (2-0).
Alex Perry
, OT –
Morris (Ill.) –
Second-ranked Morris H.S. (2-0) rolled to a 41-0 victory over Yorkville behind tailback
John Dergo
, who scored five touchdowns. All of Morris’ points came in the first half, and Morris has outscored its two opponents 82-19.
Mike Stark
, OL –
Platteville (Wis.).
Platteville (2-0) picked up its second straight to open the season, knocking off Edgerton 43-27.
Pete Saxon
, IL –
Plain City (Ohio)
Jonathan Alder H.S. (2-0) defeated Cols. Hamilton Township 48-18.
Brad Martin
, TE –
Marion (Ohio)
Pleasant H.S. (1-1) earned its first win of the season with a 17-14 win over intra-city rival Marion River Valley.
Jarrod Smith
, OL –
Fairborn (Ohio).
Fairborn (0-2) dropped its second straight, falling to Beavercreek H.S. 27-21.
