Brewer Pledges to Hoosiers
That's because James Brewer, a 6-7, 315-pound offensive lineman from Indianapolis' Arlington H.S. verbally committed to IU Coach Terry Hoeppner Thursday night, becoming the third player to commit to IU this week.
"It's close to home, and it's a nice school," said Brewer, who joins Cicero offensive lineman Cody Faulkner and Indianapolis defensive end Greg Middleton in pledging to IU this week. "It was one of my top schools to go to."
Brewer was in Bloomington with his parents on Wednesday and wound up committing Thursday night. He is the sixth offensive lineman to pledge to the Hoosiers, joining Pete Saxon, Jarrod Smith, Alex Perry, Cody Faulkner and Mike Stark.
Brewer, who said he expects to play guard in college, was also interested in Purdue, North Carolina, Kentucky and Ohio State.
Brewer is a bit of an unknown because he's been spending much of his time playing basketball instead of football on the prep level. He played basketball for most of his high school career, and only started playing football again as a senior.
"I played football in the ninth grade, and ended up cracking my wrist halfway thorugh the season and I just kind of didn't get back into it," said Brewer.
At the time Brewer was at Indianapolis' Warren Central H.S., and was playing on the basketball team. But after moving over to Arlington, he decided to give football another try this fall.
"My senior year, my mom was like, ‘why don't you go out again,' and that was about it," said Brewer.
In a short time, Brewer showed he had college potential. He said that recruiting interest began to intensify after his team's second game, and it just grew from there.
He'll be joining a program that he believes is on the upswing, which is something that wasn't lost on him during the recruiting process.
"I know they are 3-1, and they have almost a whole new coaching staff," said Brewer. "They are doing really well. They have some new traditions there that have been working well, and they are hoping to get to a bowl this year.
"That's something I want to be a part of."
