Dear Hoosier Nation,
To catch you up on last week’s game versus one of our biggest rivals, Chatham - we won 23-8. The stadium was packed, as an estimated 6,000 people attended the game. I know that’s not a huge number of fans compared to a Big 10 school like Indiana, but it was huge to us. It was not our very best game, but as Coach (Ken) Leonard says, a win is a win!
Our offense has had better days and could not seem to put a solid drive together. The success the offense had was set up by the defense, which often left us with great field position. They were also soooooooo close to getting their first shutout, which is a weekly goal for the defense.
This week at school has been exceptionally fun. It is Spirit Week, leading up to the big Homecoming weekend with a game on Friday and the dance on Saturday. We have been “dressing up” most of the week. On Tuesday, we dressed as our favorite type of music, and on Wednesday, for the seniors, it was toga day. The underclassmen dressed up as nerds. On Thursday, it was clone day, where you tried to get as many people as possible to dress up alike. The teachers played a little joke on us and came to school in OUR dress code uniform. Friday is Black and Gold Day, concluding the week with a pep rally for all of the Fall sports. I can’t help but wonder what Homecoming will be like next year at IU.
The team that we are playing this week, Southeast High School, won their first game in three years last week! They are naturally pumped up and are ready to see if they can continue their success. We came in on Monday to watch film, just as we did the rest of the week. Coach said that Southeast is the most athletic 1-5 team in the nation. As a Cyclone, we have a motto "our toughest opponent is ourselves," so we go out to every game with a purpose, to do better than the game before. Ironically, Southeast's old head coach is now our special team coordinator and secondary coach. Coach Taylor is a great coach, hilarious, and is one of the most loving people I know.
Even though he is so kind-hearted, he will still tell you what you did wrong. He is really pumped up for this game!
After the game, I plan on spending the night watching movies with my sister, Tricia, who is coming up from Florida to enjoy all of the Homecoming festivities. Both Tricia and my mom are going to be chaperones at the dance, so looks like my dance moves will be restricted a little bit. (I am horrible at dancing.) Another piece of good news: I was voted on to Homecoming Court along with nine other guys including my good friend Matty C, who plays on the team. That’s all for now!
Wish me luck tomorrow!
