Bud Mackey
’s future seemed certain after he became the first player to commit to the Hoosiers’ 2008 recruiting class. Now that promising future is very much in doubt.
According to various reports, Mackey was arrested late Friday afternoon at Scott County H.S. and charged with cocaine trafficking. He’s been charged with trafficking a controlled substance as well as trafficking a controlled substance within 1,000 yards of a of school. Mackey is being held at Scott County jail on a $10,000 bond.
The 6’4” guard is Scout.com’s 32nd-ranked player nationally and was tabbed as a frontrunner for Kentucky’s Mr. Basketball this season after averaging 18.3 points as a junior and leading Scott County to the state championship. He scored 22 points in the championship game against Ballard H.S., including 20 in the second half.
Mackey talked about state title over the summer, and how he was hoping for a repeat performance.
“It was the greatest experience ever,” Mackey told HoosierNation.com in July. “It was my first year being there, and it was great. I like playing in front of a lot of people. It makes me really hungry to do it again – I’m starving right now.”
But after Friday’s events, a repeat state championship performance, a Mr. Basketball award, and even wearing the IU uniform are likely the furthest things from Mackey’s mind.
