White Earns Another Big Ten Honor

Bloomington, Ind. – Another big week has IU’s D.J. White closing in on the “Big Dog.”

The Hoosiers’ 6’9” senior was named the co-recipient of the Big Ten’s Player of the Week award, sharing the honor with Purdue’s E’Twaun Moore. White averaged 24 points and 15 rebounds in games against Wisconsin and Northwestern, recording double-doubles in both contests to give him 14 on the season.

White has now been tabbed conference player of the week four times this season, moving him to within one of Purdue’s Glenn “Big Dog” Robinson for the all-time single-season mark of five. Robinson won the award five times during his National Player of the Year 1993-94 season when he averaged 30.3 points and 10.1 rebounds. He also tied Kirk Haston (2000-01) for the most player of the week awards in IU history.

White has been a big reason why the Hoosiers are off to a 18-3 start, including a 7-1 mark in Big Ten play. He leads the Big Ten in rebounding (10.7) and is second to teammate Eric Gordon in scoring (17.5). In Big Ten games White is averaging 19.8 points and 12.3 rebounds, putting him on pace to become the first Big Ten player to average 12 or more rebounds in 31 years.

“I don’t take him for granted,” IU Coach Kelvin Sampson said after White’s 26-point, 13-rebound effort Sunday against Northwestern. “I’ve never had a kid that consistently rebounds at the level has rebounds at every game.

“D.J. is just having a sensational senior year, and he keeps it all in perspective. His maturity is a blessing on this team.”
