Sources: Rivers Tells Crean He's Coming to IU

Bloomington –Former Georgetown guard Jeremiah Rivers is headed to Bloomington.

HoosierNation.com sources indicated that the 6-4, 205-pound guard told IU Coach Tom Crean today that he has picked the Hoosiers over Georgia Tech. Rivers will have to sit out the 2008-09 season as a transfer and will then have two years of eligibility remaining.

Rivers, who made his official visit to IU the weekend of the Adidas May Classic, played in all 34 games last season for the Hoyas. He averaged 2.5 points, 2.4 rebounds and 1.0 assists in 18.6 minutes/game. He was one of two Georgetown players who announced his intentions to transfer at the end of the season along with Vernon Macklin.

The addition of Rivers gives IU nine scholarship players for the 2008-09 season, still three below their allotted 12 spots (NCAA rules allow 13 scholarship players, but IU has cut its number to 12 as part of its self-imposed penalties following the alleged NCAA infractions committed by Kelvin Sampson’s staff).

Jeremiah is the son of Boston Celtics Coach Doc Rivers, who starred at Marquette before enjoying a 13-year NBA career as a player. Jeremiah played his prep basketball at Winter Park (Fla.) H.S., where he averaged 15.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 6.0 assists as a senior.
