Kiel the Latest to Say Yes to Hoosiers

’s run of success on the recruiting trail has continued with another in-state commit.
Columbus East H.S. Coach Bob Gaddis confirmed this afternoon that Dusty Kiel, a 6-2, 220-pound record-setting quarterback verballed to the Hoosiers Wednesday night. The 13th member of IU’s 2009 class and the second quarterback in the group along with Jeffersonville’s
, Kiel is the nation’s 78th-ranked quarterback according to Scout.com.
“I think the final decision was not only football –which he thinks will be a great situation – but also he thinks it’s going to be a great place to get a degree from,” Gaddis said. “On top of that the staff did a great job recruiting him, the program is on the upswing, it’s close to home and it’s Big Ten football.”
As a high school junior, Kiel teamed with fellow IU commit
to lead Columbus East to a 11-2 record. Kiel completed 158-of-262 passes for 2,591 yards and 33 touchdowns, breaking the school’s single-season mark for touchdowns set the season before by older brother
Dusty Kiel earned an IU offer earlier this spring and had a handful of MAC offers as well, but eventually picked the Hoosiers over
Gaddis says the Hoosiers are getting a quarterback with all the traits that most quarterbacks have, plus some others that many signal callers might lack.
“The thing about Dusty is he’s a total football player,” Gaddis said. “When he was a sophomore and his older brother was our quarterback, he was a good enough player we had to get him on the field, so he played defense for us. So he has a lot of toughness. He plays a little different than other quarterbacks I’ve had. He is a threat to not only throw it, but he can run it, and he’s a physical runner who can move.
“His best trait is he’s competitive. He’s a competitive kid to the point that he has to channel that. He’s a guy that makes those around him compete.”
Gaddis said when it comes time for Kiel to arrive on campus in the fall of 2009, he’ll have the mindset of being the man who takes over the offense and leads it on Saturday afternoons.
“He fully expects to go in there when he’s a college player and compete for the starting job and lead them to championships,” Gaddis said.
While the opportunity to play in the Big Ten and only 45 minutes from home were big draws, so was the relationships he’s developed with a couple members of IU’s coaching staff – wide receiver coach Billy Lynch and Offensive Coordinator Matt Canada. Lynch is Kiel’s primary recruiter, while Canada worked with Kiel during his various camp trips to Bloomington in recent years.
“Billy just does it with a lot of enthusiasm,” Gaddis said. “The thing with Billy that kids like is he’s a young guy with a lot of enthusiasm for the game, but he also gets to know the kids very well. I think the thing he talked to both our guys about was he had said he thought they were a couple of the top players in the state, and that he thought if they could get them to commit they could bring in other top recruits.”
Kiel’s commitment is the latest in a long line of solid commitments for the IU staff. He’s the sixth three-star player to verbal to IU, joining Wright-Baker, Wilson, linebacker
, defensive tackle
and wide receiver
. He is also the fifth in-state player to pick IU.
