Akins Waiting On Horns, Looking at Others
By
John Decker
Posted Jul 19, 2008
Cory Akins is hoping his long-time favorite college team will start showing more recruiting interest. But if they don't, the 6-0, 190-pound Florida tailback has plenty of other options to ponder...
Bloomington – Florida running back
Cory Akins
has a favorite, and it’s not
Indiana
.
In fact, the 6-0, 190-pounder from Madison County (Fla.) H.S. doesn’t list any of the half dozen schools that have offered him a scholarship this year as the frontrunner. Instead, this Floridian has always hoped he could head to the Big 12 to play his college football.
“Texas is my favorite school, it’s who I grew up liking,” Akins said. “But they haven’t offered yet.”
If the Longhorns don’t get involved with Scout.com’s 92nd-ranked running back nationally, Indiana is among a group of schools that could have a chance to lure Akins to town. Indiana,
Purdue
,
Illinois
,
Rutgers
,
Florida International
and
Florida Atlantic
are among those who have offered, while
Clemson
,
South Florida
and
Notre Dame
are also showing interest.
South Florida is the one program recruiting Akins as a defensive back, but everyone else has targeted Akins for his position of choice – running back. As a junior Akins rushed for more than 1,700 yards and 24 touchdowns while helping lead Madison County to the Class 2A state title.
A powerful runner who also has 4.47 speed in the 40, Akins shared his team’s running back duties with another elite 2009 recruit – 5-7 1/2, 178-pound
Chris Thompson
- the nation’s 35th-ranked running back who has already verballed to
Florida State
.
First-year IU assistant Dennis Springer has been recruiting Akins, and certainly has Indiana in the hunt. Akins said he receives mail for Indiana regularly, and has also talked with Springer about IU’s interest.
“They have been asking me how much I like them and if I know much about the program,” Akins said. “They said they’d like a tailback like me in the backfield.”
Indiana isn’t the only program with that same thought, but it doesn’t appear IU or anyone else will receive good news anytime soon.
“I think I might wait until after the season to decide,” Akins said.
