Bloomington –
Indiana
University found itself not only a new athletic director this week, but most likely a new vice president as well.
According to the employment letter signed by IU President Michael McRobbie and recently-named Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Fred Glass on Oct. 27, McRobbie will recommend to the Board of Trustees at its Dec. 11-12 meeting in Indianapolis that the 49-year-old Glass also be given the title of university vice president.
In addition to detailing Glass’ dual title, the employment letter spells out the particulars of Glass’ compensation and benefits package. Glass will be paid an annual salary of $410,000 beginning Jan. 2, 2009, when he takes over for outgoing athletic director Rick Greenspan. He’ll be entitled to raises on July 1 of each year.
Glass’ financial package also includes an additional $65,000 of deferred annual income, which he’ll receive in lump sum payments at the ages of 55, 60 and 65, assuming he remains as IU’s Director of Intercollegiate Athletics. As has been the case with past IU athletic directors, he’ll also be provided with a car that can be used for both personal and professional use.
McRobbie also makes it clear in the letter that rules compliance is first and foremost in his mind, and is of utmost importance once he takes over in January.
”We have discussed the importance of adherence to all applicable rules and regulations of the University, the NCAA, the Big Ten Conference, and any and all other established bodies that govern intercollegiate athletics and the University,” McRobbie wrote in the letter. “I am confident you will provide excellent leadership in this area and you have my strong support and engagement as needed in your role as Director of Collegiate Athletics.”
