Indiana Gets Release to Pursue Withey
Withey's AAU coach, Darren Matsubara, confirmed that Indiana was among the handful of schools expecting to receive the release and thus permission to pursue Scout.com's eighth-ranked center in the 2008 class. Withey's intentions are to enroll at a new Division I school in January and then become eligible to play in December of 2009.
Indiana still has official visits that it could use in the coming weeks, so the San Diego, Cal., could be a visitor to the Bloomington campus before long.
Withey has been enrolled at Arizona this semester, but has not practiced with the Wildcats team for nearly two months after leaving the team and requesting a release from his scholarship in October. The San Diego, Cal., product decided to explore other college options after Lute Olson abruptly announced his decision to retire and was replaced on an interim basis by Russ Pennell.
Arizona originally refused to release Withey earlier in the fall, but on Monday abruptly decided to grant Withey's request so that he could talk to other schools about the possibility of transferring. Withey told ESPN's Andy Katz that his last final exam is Dec. 18, and he'll begin considering other options once he's finished with the semester.
While the release gives Indiana the chance to potentially add a top-50 player in the '08 class, Texas, Kansas and Wake Forest also appear to schools that Withey will consider seriously as well. Withey gave serious consideration to both Kansas and Texas before settling on Arizona the first time around.
