Maurice Creek, 6-4, 185, Hargrave (Va.) Military Academy – Hargrave improved to 12-1 heading into the holiday break with an 83-73 win over Patrick Henry CC Dec. 17, and they're off until a Jan. 11 match-up against Averett University. Creek is averaging a team-best 18.8 points per game this season, and has had a couple of big games such as his 28-point, seven rebound effort in a 112-91 win over Massanutten and a 24-point effort in a 101-80 win over Louisburg College.
Derek Elston, 6-8, 210, Tipton (Ind.) H.S. – Elston earned MVP honors last week at the Hall of Fame Classic in New Castle. Elston averaged 15 points and five rebounds as Class 2A No. 1 Tipton (8-1) topped 2A No. 2 Bluffton 49-36 in the opener before losing to Class 4A No. 7 Franklin Central 43-41 in the final. Elston is now averaging 20.9 points and 10.4 rebounds, and he'll return to action Jan. 9 against West Lafayette.
Jordan Hulls, 6-0, 170, Bloomington (Ind.) South H.S. – Another game, another easy win for Class 4A No. 1 Bloomington South, which improved to 7-0 with a surprisingly easy 80-48 win over Evansville Harrison (5-2) Saturday night. Hulls finished with 12 points, six rebounds and five assists for the Panthers, who are ranked No. 11 nationally by USA Today. After a scoreless first quarter, Hulls scored eight points in a one-minute stretch in the second quarter to help South blow the game open. Hulls made both of his 3-point attempts and was 4-of-6 from the floor overall. He was forced the bench in the third quarter with an ankle injury, but eventually returned to the court later in the quarter. Hulls is averaging 13.5 points, 4.7 rebounds and 5.7 assists for the Panthers, who host Center Grove on Tuesday.
Bawa Muniru, 6-11, 250, Durham (N.C.) Mt. Zion Academy – Muniru is the starting center at Mt. Zion this season, although we've been unable to track down his statistics thus far.
Christian Watford, 6-7, 215, Birmingham (Ala.) Shades Valley H.S. – Watford put together another double-double, going for 20 points and 12 rebounds to lead Shades Valley (13-3) to a 52-42 win over Spain Park Friday night. Watford scored 16 of his 20 in the first half, helping his Class 6A No. 8 ranked team open a 33-19 lead at halftime. Watford is averaging 23.9 points and 12.3 rebounds for Shades Valley.
Chicago Marshall senior Darius Smith continues to turn heads in the Windy City, scoring 19 points to go along with five rebounds, six assists and seven steals in Marshall's 63-41 win over Von Steuben H.S. in the quarterfinals of the Public League Holiday Classic. Smith scored eight points in the first 3:11 to help his team to a 13-0 lead, and actually scored more points in the first half (16) than Von Steuben. Smith then had 27 points, nine rebounds and seven assists in a 70-67 semifinal loss to Lavonte Dority's Foreman H.S. team. Dority scored 20 for Foreman, which overcame an 18-point third quarter deficit to pull out the win and advance to the tourney final…in a head-to-head match-up of sophomore point guards with IU scholarship offers, Marquis Teague came out on top of Jeremiah Davis as Pike topped Muncie Central 96-75 Saturday night. Davis scored 26 points in the loss, but it was Teague that stole the show with 24 points and 14 assists. Muncie Central was without talented freshman forward Nick Osborne, who is out indefinitely with a back injury…Bloomington South sophomore Spencer Turner continues to be a huge part of the Panthers' success, as he scored 14 points in South's 80-48 win over Evansville Harrison. Turner was 5-of-9 from the field and 3-of-4 from behind the 3-point arc…Matt Carlino's Highland H.S. team is 14-1 and returns to action Jan. 6 against Dobson H.S. Highland is the No. 1 ranked team in Class 5A Division I… St. Patrick (N.J.) H.S. junior Kyrie Irving is slated to become eligible within the next 10 days. He's had to sit out the first half of the season after transferring from Montclair Kimberly Academy, where he averaged 27.6 points/game as a sophomore. St. Patrick's is ranked No. 4 nationally by USA Today.
