Capo Comes Up Big, Carlino Set For Huge Game
Maurice Creek, 6-4, 185, Hargrave (Va.) Military Academy – Hargrave (14-1) continued to roll, pounding Champlain-St. Lambert of Quebec, Canada 91-57 in the Hall of Fame Classic in Springfield, Mass. Creek was one of five Hargrave players to score in double figures, finishing with 14 points, seven rebounds and two assists. He made 4-of-10 shots from the field, including 3-of-8 from behind the 3-point arc. Creek continues to lead Hargrave in scoring at 18.1/game, and he has had a couple of big games this season including a 28-point, seven rebound effort in a 112-91 win over Massanutten and a 24-point effort in a 101-80 win over Louisburg College.
Derek Elston, 6-8, 210, Tipton (Ind.) H.S. – The Ivy Tech Mid-Winter Classic was anything but a classic Saturday, as Class 2A No. 1 Tipton dismantled Twin Lakes 91-32 at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. Elston saw limited time due to the rout, but still managed a team-best 22 points, 10 rebounds and four assists. Tipton raced to a 23-8 lead at the end of the first quarter, forcing its foes into 12 first-quarter turnovers. Elston is now averaging 20.5 points, 10.8 rebounds, 2.9 assists, 2.0 blocks and 2.0 steals. Tipton has a big game next Saturday when it hosts Kokomo.
Jordan Hulls, 6-0, 170, Bloomington (Ind.) South H.S. – Class 4A No. 1 Bloomington South (11-0) continues to roll, whipping Columbus East (78-41) and Edgewood (77-62) last week. Hulls was on target against Columbus East, knocking down 8-of-12 shots – including all three of his 3-point attempts – on his way to a 21-point, seven-rebound night. He followed that up with a 12-point (5-of-11 FGs), two-rebound, five-assist performance against Edgewood, helping the Panthers end Edgewood's 30-game homecourt winning streak. Hulls is averaging 14.6 points, 4.5 rebounds and 5.3 assists. South plays at Martinsville on Friday and then hosts Purdue-bound Patrick Bade and Franklin Central on Saturday.
Bawa Muniru, 6-11, 250, Durham (N.C.) Mt. Zion Academy – Muniru is the starting center at Mt. Zion this season, although we've been unable to track down his statistics thus far.
Christian Watford, 6-7, 215, Birmingham (Ala.) Shades Valley H.S. – Shades Valley (18-3) continued its winning ways, pounding Mountain Brook 63-31 Saturday night. Watford once again paced the Mounties, going for 25 points and 15 rebounds in the lopsided win. Watford is averaging 24.5 points and 12.6 rebounds, and Shades Valley is the second-ranked Class 6A team in the state.
Class of 2011 commit Matt Carlino made it back-to-back 30-point efforts, following up his 31-point game against Cesar Chavez on Jan. 9 with a 30-point performance in a 62-61 loss to Hamilton H.S. last Tuesday. Carlino's Highland H.S. team has a high-profile match-up tonight when it takes on Phoenix North H.S. and Texas-bound 2010 guard Daniel Bejarano…Class of 2009 target Darius Smith had 25 points, seven rebounds and seven assists to lead Chicago Marshall (12-5) to a 71-47 win over ACT. Earlier in the week, Smith scored 14 of his game-high 24 points in the first quarter in Marshall's 83-32 win over Manley H.S…with IU Coach Tom Crean watching from the sidelines, Broad Ripple freshman Ron Patterson scored 19 points in his team's 81-70 loss to Arlington Friday night…Indianapolis North Central H.S. freshman D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera scored 16 points to help his second-ranked team to a 74-67 win over No. 3 Lawrence North in the semifinals of the Marion County H.S. tournament on Friday, and then followed that up with 13 more in a 75-65 win over Warren Central in the tourney final on Saturday. Lawrence North and North Central will square off again this Friday…Washington (Ind.) sophomore Cody Zeller had 19 points and nine rebounds to lead the Hatchets to a 62-34 win over Gibson Southern last week. Washington was slated to host Jasper over the weekend, but the game was postponed due to a power outage. Zeller is averaging 16.8 points and 6.7 rebounds for Washington (10-1)…Ge'Lawn Guyn had 21 points to help lead No. 2 Scott County (Ky.) H.S. to an 87-60 win over No. 4 Bryan Station. Teammate Chad Jackson (another potential IU recruiting target) added 10 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and six steals…New Albany (Ind.) H.S. junior Donnie Hale had 20 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and six blocks in his team's 89-54 win over Scottsburg Friday night. New Albany improved to 10-0 is ranked No. 5 in the Class 4A state rankings…Muncie Central sophomore Jeremiah Davis scored 12 points to help his team to a come-from-behind 55-52 win over Noblesville Friday night. Central overcame a 13-point third quarter deficit to pick up its second straight win to improve to 6-5. Earlier, Davis had 14 points, six rebounds, eight assists and three steals to lead Central to a 79-39 win over Richmond.
