Detroit Renaissance linebacker Ishamel Thomas has cut down to six schools, who has made the cut?…
Phillis Adds Name to IU Commit List
Ryan Phillis, a 6-3, 230-pound defensive end prospect from Boardman (Ohio) H.S. became the sixth member of the Hoosiers' 2010 recruiting class. A middle linebacker at the high school level, Phillis attended a one-day IU camp on June 17, was offered a couple of days later, and accepted the offer today.
"I liked everything about Indiana," Phillis said. "The campus, the coaches, the environment – everything about it was a good fit."
While he's set to play at Boardman H.S. this season, Phillis it was at United Local H.S. a year ago where he piled up some impressive numbers and accolades. Phillis totaled 135 tackles from his middle linebacker spot, helping him earn all-conference, all-county, all-quad county and all-Northeast Ohio honors.
Despite those big numbers at middle linebacker, most schools that were recruiting him targeted him as a defensive end prospect, Indiana included.
"Other schools also mentioned me playing defensive end, and I've been practicing some moves for that switch," said Phillis, who will remain at linebacker for his senior season of high school. "They think my quickness and size make me a good fit for the position."
Phillis, meanwhile, thinks Indiana is the perfect fit for him. He had also recently camped at Michigan State, but said that there was no comparison in his mind between the two.
"Michigan State just wasn't the right fit for me," Phillis said. "Indiana just seemed perfect."
That's why Phillis decided to accept Indiana's offer, which was the first he had received. Now, he's looking forward to the opportunity to not only play in Bloomington, but in the Big Ten as well.
"It's always been a dream of mine to play Division I anywhere," Phillis said. "To be able to do it in the Big Ten – it's amazing to get the chance to do that."
