We take a look at LaSalle Peru (Ill.) defensive end C.J. Robbins, a kid with several offers, on tape…
Robbins Jumps At One of Last IU Slots
That's because the La Salle (Ill.) Peru Township H.S. prospect most likely won't be playing on that side of the ball in college. The 6'4", 255-pounder verballed to Indiana late Thursday night with the idea of moving to offense and developing into an offensive tackle.
"They said they like my feet and that I have a lot of talent," Robbins said. "I've played defensive end, but they're looking at me as an offensive tackle and they liked how I looked. They think I could grow into that size."
The Indiana coaches had a chance to look at Robbins on Monday when he was in town for a one-day camp. The visit only solidified the IU coaching staff's belief that they wanted Robbins as part of the 2011 recruiting class. With that in mind, IU offensive line coach Mo Moriarity e-mailed Robbins to let him know that if he wanted to be a Hoosier he'd probably have to jump at the scholarship offer quickly.
"Before I left (camp), they said they'd contact me before the scholarships were gone," Robbins said. "They told me the situation, that they just had three more commit and that they only had two left. From being there Monday, I knew it was the right decision for me."
While Robbins did have to act quickly to join the Hoosiers' 2011 class, he said he didn't feel rushed to make the choice.
"After leaving Monday I felt really good about it," Robbins said. "I felt it was the right place for me."
A big part of that was the chance to be on campus. Robbins had been in contact with the staff and had read a great deal about the program and university, but the first-hand account offered even more.
"I had seen pictures, but being there in person was completely different," Robbins said. "It was an amazing sight. I felt like I was at home, like I belonged there."
