Bloomington, Ind. – According to various published reports, Indiana University will hold a press conference at 2 p.m. at Assembly Hall today to announce the fate of Coach Kelvin Sampson.

The Bloomington Herald Times reported early this afternoon that IU’s players left Assembly Hall at around 12:35 p.m. The H-T has reported that Sampson was at Assembly Hall this morning, and that it is possible the players had just had a with Sampson before they departed.

The most likely scenario appears to be that Sampson will be suspended effective immediately. A final determination on his status would then come after the season, presumably after the university has had more time to delve into the NCAA’s allegations of five major recruiting violations made by Sampson and his staff from 2006-07.

One of the biggest questions still to be answered, though, is who will coach IU in the interim. Assistant coach Dan Dakich has been rumored to be the choice of IU’s administration, but the IU’s players have told university administrators that they want assistant coach Ray McCallum to take over. Additional rumors have circulated that some of the players have discussed the possibility of not playing if McCallum isn’t the choice.
