BLOOMINGTON – Nick Freeland, an All-State punter/kicker from Indianapolis’ Lawrence North H.S., will join the Hoosier program in the fall as a preferred walk-on.

Freeland was offered a guaranteed spot on the team by IU Coach Bill Lynch during a family visit to the Bloomington campus last Thursday. Freeland called Lynch on Tuesday to accept the offer, passing up on scholarship offers from both Toledo and Western Kentucky.

The 6-1, 200-pound Freeland averaged 31.9 yards/punt as a senior while also handling the team’s placekicking and field goal duties. He sent 83 percent of his kickoffs into the end zone for touchbacks last fall (38-of-46), and was perfect on 35 extra-point attempts. He also was 3-5 on field goals last fall, including a school-record 48-yarder against Terre Haute North.
